Choking risk in social care: the uncomfortable truth

We were glad to be featured in the latest issue of Care England's Savings Solutions and Sustainability magazine, in a piece co-authored with Peter Kinsey, Chair of Iris Care Group.
It looks at one of the most persistent and preventable causes of serious harm and death among people with learning disabilities — choking — and the uncomfortable truth that it is rarely sudden. In most cases it develops over time, and it can be prevented. We set out why choking risk is not static, why mealtimes are higher-risk than they are usually treated, what good practice actually looks and feels like on the floor, and why culture matters more than policy.
